Child Fitness
Reports have shown that childhood obesity is on the rise while activity level is decreasing. Children are watching T.V., playing video games, and/or using the computer more and not getting the same amount of exercise that they used to get.
Physical activity gives children opportunities to learn new skills and have fun. Best of all, children love to play, and they come up with all types of fun physical activities. Parents need to encourage physical activity, but do it safely. Due to child abductions and injuries, children should not be left unsupervised. Enjoy being physically active with your child everyday. They will appreciate your time and attention.
Tips for raising physically active children
- Have fun - children will participate if the activity is fun- ask them what they would like to do- a game of freeze tag is great!
- Do activities as a family - this will be even more enjoyable to your children whether you are actively doing the activity with them or are cheering them on from the sidelines.
- Be active yourself - children do what they see us do more often than doing what we tell them to do.
What are the components of children's physical activities?
- Aerobic fitness
- Flexibility
- Rest and recovery
- Muscular strength and endurance (this doesn't necessarily mean weight training, which is not suggested for children under 12)
